OET Speaking: Pronunciation of Common Conditions and Diseases

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

Paying close attention to the role of language in medicine provides a good foundation for effective doctor-patient communication and it facilitates a more robust dialogue between doctors and patients.

The quality and type of interaction that occurs in clinical settings is vitally important to proper care: patients feel comfortable with caregivers who are attentive and who establish clear and understandable communication.

Health professionals preparing to take the OET should always try to overcome, or at least neutralize, any sources of uncertainty that may affect the understanding of the patient. For the purpose of providing assistance with the pronunciation of most commonly used health conditions, I have created this list that you can refer to when uncertain of the correct pronunciation.

Good luck.
